Important information when purchasing foreign exchange in South Africa

Foreign exchange can be purchased 60 days prior to departure from South Africa.
To purchase your foreign exchange, visit your closest Bidvest Bank/Rennies Foreign Exchange branch with the following documentation:
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of travel arrangements
  • Green bar-coded identity document/temporary resident permit
  • Proof of residential address (not older than three months)

Did you know?
The single annual discretionary allowance*, that includes your travel allowance, if R500 000 per annum for adults and R160 000 per annum for children below the age of 18 years.
In addition, travellers can travel abroad with R5000 (in South African Rands).



* can be used for any combination of the following allowances: annual travel allowance, annual gift allowance and loans, annual maintenance transfers and donations to missionaries.
