By Bidvest Bank
Your time is like any investment, you want to make sure you’re getting the maximum output by putting in minimum input. Because we’re all trying to cut costs and save more these days, we’ve searched the country for the very best free things to do. The first in our nationwide series, here’s our selection of Johannesburg activities that’ll have you making the most of the big smoke – city of gold, greenery and great people.

1) Expand your mind

When we’re looking for things to do in Joburg, it’s easy to forget that many of our museums and libraries are free. You can lose yourself in the world of books or discover the history of the city’s bikes, trams, buses and steam-driven vehicles at the James Hall Museum of Transport. Those with an interest in health sciences can head over to Wits University’s Alder Museum of Medicine. At the Credo Mutwa Cultural Village in Soweto, lovers of local art and culture will marvel over the astonishing collection of sculptures and buildings documenting African art, architecture, culture and folklore. And for those searching for truth from the inside out, learn how to meditate at one the recreation centres around town.

2) Be inspired

When it comes to creative inspiration, the city offers a thriving art scene. From the dynamic exhibitions displayed at the beautiful Goodman, Everard Read and Circa galleries to the impressive collection at JAG. With over 9000 works of art to ogle over – including works by Picasso, Monet and Gerard Sekoto, and ranging from 17th-century Dutch paintings to contemporary South African art – you could lose yourself in beauty for days.

3) Immerse yourself in nature

Far more than a concrete jungle, Joburg boasts an abundance of parks and nature reserves. If you’re looking for Joburg activities centred around nature, kick off your shoes for a lazy picnic at Zoo Lake or the Botanical Gardens, or head off for a hike at Klipriviersberg or Kloofendal Nature Reserve.

4) Let loose

You don’t need an expensive gym contract to get your heart rate up and the endorphins flowing. Outdoor (and free!) gyms are on the rise. Phiri Park outdoor gym in Soweto is one of 12 outdoor gyms across the city and if gym’s not your thing, keep an eye on the Open Salsa website, which updates salsa fans on free dancing sessions around town.

5) Trawl the alternative to malls

Gone are the days when Johannesburg activities were limited to moping around shopping centres. The city’s been infused with a new energy and dynamism which has made way for developments like Work Shop New Town and 27boxes in Melville – a retail, design and social space made entirely from shipping containers. Without spending a cent, these spaces are melting pots of contemporary design, vibrant flavours and trendsetting characters driving South Africa’s design scene forward.

With Joburg activities that help you spend less, you’ll inevitably save more. If you’re looking for a spot for those extra savings, consider opening a Bidvest Bank Fixed Deposit account and earn higher interest rates on your money. Find out more
